Have you ever considered making a New Year’s resolution? New Year’s is a time of celebration and new beginnings. Many Americans make New Year resolutions to break their bad habits and start over new. Typical New Year’s resolutions include losing weight, quitting smoking, getting out of debt, and spending more time with family members. Do these resolutions really work? According to the website “Step-case life-shack”, New Year’s resolutions are nonsense and mostly hypothetical. “New Year resolutions are bogus”, said history teacher Craig Simonetti. “New Year’s is a bogus holiday. It is the same as any other day of the year. A New Year will not cause people to act differently. If you want to make a change in your life you need to do it the moment you think of it. Change is a result of hard work, motivation, and determination”. Perhaps people are who they are and a new year will not bring change unless the person wants it badly enough. New Year’s gives people a sense of security in regards to changing their negative ways. One should strive to take action without a New Year’s resolution.

Nicole Polizzi, or better known as Snooki, a cast member on the MTV show “Jersey Shore”, has once again gotten herself into trouble. Only difference this time, it was without drinking. On Monday, May 30th, in Renaissance City, of Florence, Italy, Nicole ran into an Italian police car. She crashed right into the back of it. The reason for the “accident” is said to be done on purpose, and to endorse the popularity of the show. “Yes I believe Snooki ran in to the police car on purpose,” states Frank Casale a junior attending New Dorp High School. “No one talks about the show and the cast since it stopped last season.” Nicole was driving in the front seat, accompanied by her co-star Deena in the passenger seat. The back of the car was filled with crew. She was driving a Fiat Multiple during Italy’s rush hour traffic. When Nicole crashed, which was said to be a “slow-speed impact”, not only did she crash into the car, she injured the two Italian police officers inside it. While the officers were sent to the hospital, Nicole was questioned by the police and her license was examined. Nicole and Deena were uninjured, as they sat, waiting on the edge of the curb. “The cast shouldn’t be in Italy,” says Nicolette Monte, a junior at new Dorp High School. “They can’t follow the rules and they are going to cause problems.” Nicole and the rest of her Jersey shore cast arrived in Italy early last month. There, they filmed the 4th season of the show; which will be later aired this year. The guys themselves, (Mike, Pauly, Vinny, and Ronnie) racked up a total of 300Euros in fines for various traffic violations. They were later sent to a press conference; which is where they admitted driving in Italy is a difficult task. Tweet

The post Snooki’s Pickle appeared first on New Dorp Voice.

As a result of Osama Bin Laden’s death on Sunday May 1, 2011, feelings across the United States are very mixed; for instance, New York, (considering 9-11). President Barack Obama visited Manhattan, NY on May 5, 2011. He traveled to the Manhattan fire-house, Engine 54, Ladder 4, Battalion 9. Also, Obama never mentioned Bin Laden’s name when talking to the firemen and other 9-11 victims. The Manhattan fire house dealt with the heaviest losses as a result of 9-11. They lost 15 workers. Obama, grateful for the men’s’ dedication and sacrifice assured them that, “When we say we will never forget, we will never forget.” Obama hopes the news of Osama’s death brings comfort to America and especially to the firefighters of Engine 54. Obama once again thanked the men and viewed a bronze memorial plaque commemorating the firefighters lost on September 11, 2001. Former Mayor Rudy Giuliani joined Obama at the station to talk to the firemen. Later on, Obama traveled to Ground Zero and visited with 9-11 victims’ families and laid a wreath. The days after Osama’s death was said to be a moment of justice for New York. A new building is being built where the two towers used to stand at Ground Zero. The skyscraper, which will be known as the Freedom Tower is more than 60 stories high now. It also includes gigantic fountains and pools which reflect the building. “I feel happy for my country,” states Ashley Sanchez, a junior at new Dorp High School. “Finally justice has been served.” Tweet

The post D.C. to New York, NEVER FORGET appeared first on New Dorp Voice.

What’s one thing that there has been nonstop talk about in this past month? That of course, would be the royal wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton on April 29, 2011. People around the United States have been referring to it as the wedding of the century. The funny thing is that the US took the wedding to a whole other level. “Yes, I stayed home just to watch the royal Wedding, “states Ashley Sanchez, New Dorp High School junior. “It was the first royal wedding during my lifetime.” The day of the wedding, adults and kids alike stayed home. They got up early, even earlier than they would have to get up on an average day, just to turn on their televisions and tune in to the wedding. Some people even packed up and traveled to England just to stand on a street with locals and watch the procession of the wedding party. Also, speaking of parties, some people joined together and threw parties as a result of the wedding. They had tea and games. Some games included “What would you wear if you were going to a royal wedding?”, awarding prizes for the best outfit. There was also ongoing gossip about the wedding itself. Some questions were “What dress will Kate wear? Will Kate wear Diana’s crown? What will be William’s and Kate’s title?” There were also numerous T.V. specials and a countdown all throughout the week. “It is the first wedding in 350 years that a royal marries a commoner. It had to be special,” states Romana Chobey, a New Dorp high School junior. “It is a significant for the Us and especially for England, since the way the monarchy might be changed.” Ever since the engagement five months ago, preparation for the wedding has been nonstop. Buckingham Palace had to be closed down for rehearsals, synchronizing of traffic lights took place, (just in case they had to speed up the procession), and 1,400 cameras were set up around the area. There were even special edition handmade plates, for $1,500 with William’s and Kate’s monogram on it. Only 240 were produced. Last but not least, a coin that will be used throughout the UK and over sea countries was made. It has a picture of the bride and groom with their wedding date. The wedding itself was spectacular. It is defiantly not just memorable, but it was a historic event. Tweet

The post Party In The USA….? appeared first on New Dorp Voice.

In today’s world you can see numerous people on the streets carrying and drinking an energy drink. And we drink it because we feel tired and need some sort of a boost for the rest of the day or just because you like it. Whether you like it or not drinking energy drinks can put you at risk towards serious effects and even death. New dorp High School student Lillian Ibrahim was asked, “What do you think of energy drinks?” She answered, “Oh my god I love them!” Energy drinks are made for those who need a little boost to get them through the day, or just to enjoy the flavor of it. Drinking energy drinks is like consuming 5 cups of coffee at once. There are so many ingredients put into the drinks that outnumber the effects of one cup of coffee. One gradient both in energy drinks and coffee is caffeine. This ingredient increases you reaction time, blood pressure, and can benefit your life each day. But consuming too much of it at once can put your body at risk. You are putting in so much caffeine ingredient from the energy drinks that it can put your body at risk. Stuff like insomnia, increased heart rate and anxiety can happen if you drink energy drinks. This was proved by many scientists and experiments done all over the world. They also proved that if you consume more than one energy drink that can lead your life to death. Numerous accounts have happened all over the world where someone drank more than 1 energy drink and ended up dying while playing in a basketball match. Energy drinks are a problem and people tried to get rid of them from the stores. But were unsuccessful and ended up put back into stores for more people to buy. High School student John LaPre was asked, “Do you know the downside to drinking energy drinks? He answered, “It messes up your liver.” Overall energy drinks are a no no to life. If you have to wake yourself up at night make someone slap your face hard enough or just drink a hot cup of coffee. It can taste just as good and drinking it can be a benefit. You might not like the fact that energy drinks are a risk to your life, but people create them just for you to get pulled in and buy them.

Boston is known for their heated rivalries with New York sports teams. But who knew their citizens could be so flat out rude? Boston “folk” think that they’re better than everyone else. I beg to differ. After being in Boston for a couple of days, you begin to realize that everyone has something to say to out of towners. Most of the time, its something along the lines of a derogatory term directed towards you. If you are wearing anything from an out of town team, you are going to hear about it. You will get trash-talked, cursed at and disrespected. Honestly, it’s disgusting how ignorant and rude people can be to other human beings. If they were to come to New York, they would be shocked how classy we are. We wouldn’t curse them out unless they deserved it. In New York, we don’t care about your teams because we know we’ll always be better. In conclusion, Boston “folk” should get some class because it gives all their citizens a bad name. There is never a reason to be disrespectful to someone that just wants to visit your city. New York will always be better.

Who are you not going to watch at 4pm? On May 25,2011, Oprah Winfrey will put an end to the Oprah Winfrey Show. It will be her last episode and it’s being filmed in Chicago. The Oprah Winfrey Show has been on for 25 years and a top rated talk show for over two decades. ” Yes I will be watching the last episode, ” states Ms.Kaminski, a history teacher at New Dorp High School, (NDHS). “I am looking forward to watching her late night talk show.” The final episode was confirmed by Oprah’s Winfrey’s Harpo Productions, (Oprah spelled backwards) two weeks ago. Also, Oprah informed her viewers back in November 2009 that the 25th season would be her last. Since then, Oprah started her own television network called the Oprah Winfrey Network, (OWN) which started on January 1,2011. Later in 2011, Oprah will host her own late night talk show named Oprah’s next Chapter which will appear on OWN and hopefully have just as many viewers as her daytime talk show. “After 25 years she has been very accomplished and made a name for herself,” states Ashley Sanchez, a junior at NDHS. “Therefore she can leave with a legacy.” The daytime talk show first aired in 1986 on 120 channels. It was shown in 45 countries and had over 10million viewers. In the end of the first season it grossed $125million, which Oprah received $30million. To catch Oprah’s final season, tune in on April 7 to view new episodes leading to her final one.

As one approaches their junior year in high school you may begin to think about college and the necessary steps in preparing to apply. Some students may already know what they want to do after high school or what college they want to attend, but in case you have no idea as to which way to turn here are some helpful hints to guide you along the way. 1. Begin registering for the SAT or ACT exam. They are both offered a number of times throughout the year. The main difference between the two is that the ACT exam also has a science component and the SAT exam will penalize you for wrong answers. You can go to collegeboard.com to find out when each of these exams are given and when the registration deadline is. 2. Start to think about what SAT II exams you may want to take as well. Some colleges require that you have these exams. They are offered in different subject areas including: biology, chemistry, physics, literature, US History, World History, Math and various languages. 3. Fee waivers are available to help defray the cost of these exams. Visit Mrs. Clark in the college office room S229 for more information. 3. When meeting with your guidance counselor for your senior year program try to take challenging courses including College Now Courses. 4. Get involved in extra curriculum activities as well as community service events. There are numerous scholarships available which are based on the amount of community service you have participated in. 5. Research information about colleges and careers. You can go visit the college office as well to find out more information. 6. Ask various colleges to send you information and applications. 7. Start to think about what teachers you will ask to write recommendation letters for you. Most colleges ask that you supply three letters of recommendation. 8. Look into summer enrichment programs. 9. Start to visit colleges that interest you. 10. Begin to write your college essay along with your resume. 11. Go visit the two big college fairs that are being held in New York City and New Jersey. On Sunday April 6th at the Jacob Javits Convention Center and on Wed. April 6th and Thursday April 7th at the New Jersey Convention and Exposition Center. Hope these ideas gave you some insight as to the steps to be taken. Just keep in mind: study, do your best in school, get involved in outside activities and remember high school can be the best years of your life so enjoy!

The tsunami and earthquake that caused mass destruction in Japan, killed two workers, Kazuhiko Kokubo, 24, and Yoshiki Terashima, 21, during an attempt to cool down the Fukushima number 1 power plant. Both workers were found dead in the basement of the number 4 reactor’s turbine building. The two workers are believed to have died from blood loss due to extensive internal injuries. Tepco, Tokyo’s electric company, stated that the 2 men died around 4 pm on March 11th, suggesting that they died of the monstrous tsunami rather than from the radiation damages from the leakage in the neuclear reactors. Tepco refrained from giving out any information before informing the family and handing over the bodies. The 2 workers were last seen heading towards the number 4 reactor’s turbine building after the 9.0 magnitude earthquake struck. Tepco have been searching the turbine building and are pumping water from the basement to cool down the reactors. “To lose two young employees who tried to ensure the safety of the plant is a most deplorable event,” Tepco Chairman Tsunehisa Katsumata said in a statement. Tsunehisa Katsumata also added, “Our company will vow never to let this kind of tragedy happen again and do our utmost to resolve the accident at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant.” One of the two bodies was found floating in the basement of the turbine building while the second one was found in an area where water was receded. The bodies had to be decontaminated immediately due to their bodies taking in high dose of radiation for more than a week. On Saturday, Tepco announced that the a cracked storage pit with deadly radioactive excceding 1,000 millisieverts per hour was the source of the water contaminating the ocean. On Sunday night, Tepco was attemping to prevent the radiated water from leaking into the ocean. An earlier attempt included Tepco using concrete to to plug in the cracked cable trench leading to the damaged storage pit but it failed due to the water not allowing the concrete to settle. NISA spokesman Hidehiko Nishiyama stated that radiation crisis has to be dealt in parts and that Japan will be on track in a few months allowing them to foresee the future.

Since when were sanitizers stylish? Last year Bath and Body works came out with a keychain hand sanitizers. The key chains are simply the mini sanitizer bottles, with a jelly soft plastic around them, and a clip that attaches on to your bag or key ring. These little clip-ons are the newest trend and people everywhere are carrying them around. “I like how they come in differnt scents and and colors,” states Peter Marron, a junior at new Dorp High School. “There are many differnt ones to choose from.” All the mini sanitizers come in the same anit-bacterial scents as the big bottles. You can find anywhere from your classic cucumber-melon to your seasonal scents such as vampire blood. Also, just like the scents, the key chains come in a variety of colors and styles. You can purchase solids, glitter solids, tie-dyes, prints, and glow in the dark. The price for the sanitizers are a $1.50, and the price of the keychain is $.50; ($2.00 in total). Now if you run out of sanitizer, do you have to buy another keychain? Nope; just take out the bottle and replace it with a new one. They are interchangeable. So in the end it’s reusable and economical. “It’s great that these new sanitizers were released,” states Ashley Sanchez, a junior at new Dorp High School. “They are helping kids become more aware of hygiene.” As the season’s change, it’s very easy to catch a cold or become ill. That’s why it’s important to always wash your hands and keep yourself clean. Thanks to Bath and Body Works mini sanitizer key chains, people can be happy, healthy, and stylish.
