Pull, a rising band from New Dorp High School has just released their new extended play, Emergency Protocol. The band consists of a lead guitarist, Roemello Agjmurati, a drummer, Christopher Guzman, and a pianist/ keyboardist, Joseph Rice. After recruiting a new bass player, Deanna Giordano, they hit The Red Room Studio, near St. George, Staten Island with a commitment to accomplish something new. The EP titled Emergency Protocol consists of these five songs in the following order: Hopeful Horizon, Eternal Endeavor, The Witness, Song 4, and Chocolate Snow. After being published on iTunes, Google Play and various other webstores, on January 5th, minor advertising started to roam the school’s hallways; from person to person primarily by word of mouth. “I say the band is forced together by our friendship,” said Joseph, Pull’s keyboardist. Roemello added “It is nothing special when we gather up together to write something new, it is like spending time with the people you love.” Roemello discussed how the writing process goes with the rest of the band as well. It is obvious that the band is very dedicated to their work. They even have an upcoming gig planned. They will be playing in Battle of the Bands on April 6th, 2013. The event will be held at the Full Cup, 388 Van Duzer Street in Stapleton, Staten Island. It will take place between 6:30 pm and 12:30 am.

This past Friday , Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D was released, it made $23.03 million and made it to the first place of 2013 movies.Texas Chainsaw 3D begins directly after the events of the 1974 when the townspeople of Newt, Texas enact revenge on Leatherface and his cannibal family members by burning their home to the ground. Jedidiah “Jed” Sawyer known as “Leatherface” and Heather Miller survived. Heather was just a baby when the house was burned down but as she grew older she found out her grandmother had left her that house. Jed knew about Heather because of his grandmothers stories, but Heather was terrified of Jed, he tried killing her three times, but little did he know she was the little girl his grandmother used to talk about. Jed known as Leatherface continues to frighten the people from Newt, Texas. Many of Chainsaw fans are thrilled with the movie, the bloody scenes, the way he massacred the people.“When I saw this movie I thought it was one of the best horror movie made in 3D. The way he took off the faces of the people was crewed and the way he sewed their faces onto his face. I enjoyed watching this movie, I wonder if theres going to be a part 3 since he hasn’t died yet,” said a fan of the movie Devante Belton. “To me the 3D made it more scary, I felt like he was going to kill me when he was using the chainsaw to kill the people. I thought the movie was great it still leaves you wondering what’s going to happen to him, hopefully there’ll be another part to the movie,” said another fan David Pantaleon. As it can be seen, many are pleased with this movie and many are looking foword to another part to this horror movie. It was later uncovered that her body was drowned in her bathtub. On December 12th, a titan of a movie came to theatres. However the main character is anything but a titan. Bilbo Baggins, played by Martin Freeman, is the main protagonist of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. The Hobbit is a prequel to the hit trilogy The Lord of the Rings. It tells the story of Bilbo Baggins who is a stay at home hobbit who is not the most adventurous guy around. One day baggins is visited by Gandalf the Grey, played by Ian McKellen, he brings Bilbo on the adventure of a lifetime. 2012 was a big year; one hit was the rider on the invisible horse. PSY is the creator of Gangnam Style. This song was a huge hit in North America despite it being of the K-pop genre. It was released in North America on the 15th of July. It was the first video to reach 1 billion views on youtube. The MTV music awards of 2012 was hosted by Kevin Hart. The award ceremony took place on September 6, 2012. It was broadcasted live from the Staples Center Arena in Los Angeles. This was the lowest watched MTV Awards since 2007, because they changed the day from Sunday to Thursday. Carly Rae Jepson wrote the big hit Call Me Maybe. This song became not only a radio favorite, but also a famous internet meme.

Steven Pepe, the music teacher at New Dorp High School and his choir with the help of the band are coming back with another annual performance. This year, it will fall on the 19th of December at 7:00 PM. The Winter Show promises to be an impressive once again performance. “It gives the students the opportunity to perform and work towards a performance as well as to celebrate the holidays. It gives them something to be excited about. It is hard to teach when you don’t have a goal in mind, we get to play songs that everyone knows.” said Steven Pepe. Similarly to the previous years, the show will consist of a choir selected by Steven Pepe himself and a band. The band currently consists of a few guitarists, Maxim Kleiman on the bass, and Daniel Bond on the drums. “They’re ready for it. At this stage they’re ready for. I been nervous the whole year but we pulled through.” said Pepe. The band tries to practice as much as they possibly can; almost three times a week. They are expected to play a number of songs on the day of the show. All of the songs are based on the upcoming holiday season. They focus mainly on the topic of Christmas. As the practices go on, they continue to become better and progress to be more in sync with each other. Their bonds with each other have been increased. Looking forward for a successful show, “I think it will turn out good, hoping a lot will be there. It’s free, we are not selling tickets this year.” said Pepe once again.

This week in New Dorp High School, the students of every grade level are coming together for another performance. This year’s Sing, the musical promises to be a spectacle to remember. Sing is an annual event that the school forms. Two teams, Senior-Soph and Junior-Fresh. These two groups will be attempting to outdo each other in a battle of originality. Each team must make a play from scratch and bring it to life in their own special way. “I was prepared and nervous because I’m in charge of everything,” said Anglie Breslin, the director of Sing 2012. The members of the teams must practice for a long time with effort before the actual performance can take place. The process of training is very stressful for all the students participating in Sing. During one of the practice sessions of Senior Soph; they were having a lot of problems with lighting and sound. They also had some trouble with moving and setting up the props on stage. On the night of the play, the performers must perform their creative acts in front of an enormous audience at New Dorp High School’s auditorium. In the audience, there will be judges that will judge their performance on various different categories. The categories include band, dance, acting and proper design. The winner of the majority of these categories will be pronounced as the winner of Sing 2012. “It was postponed weeks later. It was suppose to be November 16 now it is December 6,” said Anglie Breslin as well. “We were more than excited to get it done back to normal.” (Jazlyn Cerbin, Roarke Carrique, and Lindsay Martini had also contributed to this article) Tweet

The post Sing 2012 Performance is Here appeared first on New Dorp Voice.

On Wednesday May 2nd and Thursday May 3rd, New Dorp High School had its annual spring show. This year the show being presented is “Pippin”. “Pippin” is a broadway musical which debuted in 1972, it was written by Roger O. Hirson and also featured music and lyrics composed by Stephen Schwartz.. This musical is different from other musicals because while it has a story going on, the show is clearly being controlled by a man known as “The Lead Player”(Played by Matthew McComb). This man is there to basically steer the show into the right direction and ensure that he never disappoints the audience, Of course this means that this show needs to have a decent plot to explain why there would be a “Lead Player” in the first place and it gives us just that. The story of Pippin (or how the show is supposed to be preformed) shows the life of the first born son of Charlamagne (Played by Brandon Smith), King of the Holy Roman Empire. Pippin (Played by Joesph Caruselle) is an educated child where as his brother Lewis (Played by Blerim Cukovic) was raised to be a soldier. Throughout the play, Pippin is trying to find meaning in his life and promises his tutors (and the audience) to never waste his life on “frivilous” things. Pippin does several things to find his “Corner of the Sky” or meaning in life such as going to war, asking his grandmother (Played by Jessica Maldonado) for help on how to find meaning, killing his father to become king with the help from his untrustworthy step-mother Fastrada (Played by Sabrina Bogen) and even by falling in love with a wonderful woman named Catherine (Played by Amanda Courtright) and moving into her large estate with her son Theo (Played by Robert Heany) and his pet duck, Otto. When all that fails, it is revealed to Pippin that his search for greatness and meaning was doomed from the start and the only way he could feel truly complete was to perform “The Grand Finale” which consisted of Pippin jumping into a flame and being killed. After a huge song (literally entitled “The Finale”) performed to convince Pippin to jump into the flame. Pippin ultimately declines and goes back to Catherine and Theo, where he was the happiest. In anger The Lead Player takes away all of the sets, takes away all of the music and asks Pippin if this is how he really wants to live, with no music or magic, just with a very “casual” life. The play finally ends with Theo singing the song “Corner of the Sky” from the play and being praised and taken away by the lead player and the rest of the cast symbolizing that the entire process of finding ones meaning will be repeated by Theo. Overall, The school’s performance of “Pippin” was amazing and it truly shows how hard the actors, band, dancers, and people alike work to make a phenominal show. The cast did their parts perfectly without any problems or conflicts. Being in the band, I can’t really say that we performed all the songs to their potential or else this would be a bias article but i think that we did a great job. The dancers also did an amazing job, their dances matched the flow of the show and it never seemed unnecessary. Truly, this was a show that one shouldn’t have missed due to it’s intricate plot, funny lines, and amazing music.

“The Hunger Games” is a movie based off of the first book in the three book series written by Suzanne Collins. The movie was released by Lionsgate and was directed by Gary Ross. The movie was released on March 23, 2012. It was a much anticipated movie for many people. Whether they read the books or not, people were excited to see what “The Hunger Games” was all about and people that were fans of the books were excited to see everything they imagined while reading the books being brought to life on the big screen. The series takes place in futuristic North America after wars and natural disasters have wiped out most of the land. With the remaining land, the government created 13 Districts that surround the ruling city called the Capitol. This new country is now known as Panem. The Capitol is very rich and very strict. The Districts are all poor and work to make things for the Capitol. The 13 Districts decide to rebel against the Capitol but the Capitol is to powerful and they supposedly destroy the 13th District and this leads to the Capitol winning the war. As punishment for starting the uprising, the Capitol creates The Treaty Of Treason in which something called the Hunger Games is created to show how the Capitol is in control. The Hunger Games is a televised event that happens once every year. The rules are that one man and one women from the ages of 12 through 18 are chosen at random at a public reaping from each of the remaining 12 Districts to be put into an arena to fight to the death. Before being put into the arena, the tributes are brought to the Capitol to learn how to fight and to learn survival skills. The games are over when there is only one person remaining. Katniss Everdeen is the main character in this story. She is played by Jennifer Lawrence, who does an amazing job in portraying the role. Katniss’s little sister, Prim, played by Willow Shields, gets chosen at the reaping, but Katniss volunteers to take her place. Gale Hawthorne, played by Liam Hemsworth is Katniss only friend in the movie, as they both have to provide for their families since both of their fathers died in the same mine accident. Peeta Mellark, played by Josh Hutcherson is the male tribute that gets chosen at the reaping to be put into the arena with Katniss. Both Jennifer and Josh do an amazing job in playing the parts. They have great chemistry with each other and their facial expressions make up for the little dialogue. Both actors wanted nothing more but to do their parts justice for all of the fans, and they sure did not disappoint. You can see the terror in their faces as they are put into the arena and it made the experience feel very believable and real. Haymitch Abernathy, played by Woody Harrelson, playes Katniss and Peeta’s mentor. Harrelson does great job in portraying the drunken wreck of a mentor. Cinna who is played by Lenny Kravitz plays Katniss’s stylist who is in charge of making sure Katniss looks her best in order to help her gain sponsors. Lenny does amazing in showing how gentle Cinna is and how much he cares for Katniss. Stanley Tucci plays Caesar Flickerman and does a more than amazing in playing the charismatic talk show host. Wes Bentley plays Seneca Crane, the head game maker and once you got over how awesome his beard looked, you could see how perfect he was for the part. President Snow was played by Donald Sutherland, who did a great job in showing just how vicious the President is. Last but not least, Effie Trinket who is played by Elizabeth Banks plays the Capitol citizen, in charge of chaperoning the tributes from District 12. Banks does a great job as she is all dolled up in her crazy Capitol fashions and bejeweled fingernails. All of the actors in the movie did a phenomenal job in bringing the book to life. The way that the movie was shot was amazing. From seeing District 12, one of the poorest Districts there are, to seeing the very rich and advanced Capitol city, to seeing the huge arena and the cornocopia, it was everything and more that fans of the books could imagine. The graphics really showed just how advanced the technology they had was. You could see the gamemakers center and you could see how they were controlling everything that happened to the tributes in the arena with their touch screens and holograms. The way that the movie was shot in the arena really made you feel like you were right there with them, watching the games with the citizens on t.v. The book was really brought to life. From the acting to the script to the costumes and the music that brought everything together, the movie was amazing and really is a must see. It has action, suspense, politics and even some romance. The film is rated PG-13 for violence. The message of the books were brought through well with the movie, that no form of violence, whether it’s for good or bad is not OK and it never should be encouraged. In the faces made alone in the shots from the Districts, you can see how they all know that what they are forced to watch every year is not okay. When the train taking Katniss and Peeta to the Capitol first arrives, you can see how Katniss is so disgusted with the people for cheering and even how unhappy she is with Peeta for even paying attention to the Capitol people in the first place, you can see how violence has a negative effect on people. The movie was great and no one should miss the chance of seeing it on the big screen. Fans of the books can now look forward to the second book in the series, Catching Fire, being brought to the big screen [...]

The post “The Hunger Games” Movie Review appeared first on New Dorp Voice.

On Friday, March 9th New Dorp’s second and final Black Box Production of the year took place. The show, entitled ” Bang Bang You’re Dead”, was about a teenager named Josh ( played by Joseph Caruselle) who goes into his high school with a gun and murders five teenagers. The play shows his perspective and why he wanted to shoot the five teenagers. The show was carefully chosen and directed by AFADA Theater teacher, Mr. Stoebling. “I chose this particular work because I felt it was a welll structured play that would be accessible to a young cast given the majority of the characters were high school students,” said Stoebling. “As we began rehearsals, the content of the play seemed perhaps a bit ‘foreign’ to some of the student actors. ” Josh reveals his motives for the murders after he is haunted by the spirits of the five teens he shot; they pressure him over and over to say why he killed them and through a series of very well played flashbacks, Josh becomes violent after he gets his first gun. Josh eventually goes hunting with his grandfather and shoots a buck, while he did not want to shoot it in the first place, he wanted to become a man and stop kids from laughing at him in school so he shot it and got a picture taken by his grandfather. Back in his hometown, Josh brags about his kill with picture in hand to his current girlfriend Katie ( played by Danielle Gibson) who is not impressed at all because he ditched her on a date to go hunting. Katie ends up dumping Josh for a new person, Josh’s friend Michael ( played by Blerim Cukovic). This sets off a rage within Josh and eventually makes him write a threat on a black board in his school. News eventually gets around and Josh is high suspected of the act, while he denies it, the school knows the truth of it all and Josh’s parents are informed about the incident. Furious with Josh, his parents take away his gun leave Josh beyond angry at his parents, after hearing voices in his head telling him to steal the gun, he eventually takes the gun back. When his parents catch Josh in the act of stealing his gun back, Josh shoots and kills both his parents. Immediately filled with remorse, Josh determines that there’s no going back now and goes to his high school to make himself known. Inside the school, Katie, Michael and three other friends of theirs Matt, Jessie, and Emily ( played by Auel Kanaybekov, Allix Regina, and Jessica Maldonado respectively) are all sitting down talking. One by one Josh shoots and kills them all in order to make the laughing and ridicule stop. Immediately after telling the spirits why he killed them, the spirits reveal that they are going to haunt him for the murders forever and the play ends on a scene of Josh kneeling down full of remorse for his previous actions. Overall, this Black Box Production was a very deep and suspensful play that would leave you to seriously think about the minds of students who commit these massive tragedies. The play was so deep and mind opening, that even Deirdre DeAngelis, The principal of New Dorp High School, admitted that she was moved to tears during the show on the next day’s announcements. The moral of the show would have to be that ridicule and constant bullying, both physical and verbal, can lead students to do horrible things. “If we can start with respect and acceptance for all we can hopefully go a long way towards change in our world and maybe, one day, make this play seem ‘foreign’ to everyone.” Concluded Mr. Stoebling.

Josh reveals his motives for the murders after he is haunted by the spirits of the five teens he shot; they pressure him over and over to say why he killed them and through a series of very well played flashbacks, Josh becomes violent after he gets his first gun.

Stoebling.
