As for the AFC the Baltimore Ravens have come out on top because of their unbeatable defense and their accurate quarterback Joe Flacco. With the 49ers is the same story with their remarkable comebacks, catches, and touchdowns throughout the season. the 49ers rookie quarterback Colin Kaepernick led the 49ers to the superbowl with his amazing passer rating of 97.9%. As for Joe Flacco(the quarterback for the Baltimore Ravens since 2008)he has a passer rating of 86.3%. which is really good for a quarterback that’s been playing for 4 seasons. “I was extremely happy when the Ravens won the Superbowl” said Ryan Van Pelt a student at New Dorp High School. “When the 49ers started to come back in the 4th quarter it made the game ten times more exciting”. “I dont really watch football but, the Superbowl even had me excited” said Conor Fox a student at New Dorp High School. “I only watch the superbowl throughout the football season”.

Many thought that this football game between Alabama’s Crimson Tide and Indiana’s Notre Dame would be one for the century. Alabama could not be stopped in the first quarter jumping out to a 14-0 lead. The Crimson Tide continued to score against the Fighting Irish, by halftime the score was 28-0. Alabama kept running the ball against Notre Dame whose defense is known for stopping the run. Eddie Lacy was named offensive MVP with a total of 157 rushing yards and two touchdowns. A.J McCarron, the quarterback for Alabama, threw for 264 yards and airing out four touchdown passes. Nick Saban, Crimson Tides head coach, has led them to win three out of the last four BCS National Championships. After returning from halftime Alabama was sure that they had a large enough lead to capture the championship. Alabama scored once again making them lead the Irish, thirty-five to zero. They improved their lead from a 34 yards pass to Amari Cooper. Finally, Notre Dame was finally able to put points on the board with a two yard rushing touchdown by Everett Golson. There were no more points scored by either side for the remaining time in the third quarter. The fourth quarter began just like all the others, with a touchdown by Alabama which made the Crimson Tide lead the Fighting Irish 42-7. Soon after Notre Dame countered with a six yard touchdown pass to Theo Riddick which brought the final score to 42-14. Alabama has proven this year that it has the nation’s best college football team.

Many people were affected by Hurricane Sandy on the east coast of America. Hurricane Sandy ruined homes, businesses and also killed and injured many people in Staten Island and across the Coast. Gary Knapp, a student and member of the New Dorp Varsity Baseball Team, was severely affected by this hurricane. Gary, who lives in the New Dorp area, got seven feet of ocean water on his entire first floor. Sandy ruined Gary’s room and most of his personal belongings “I cannot believe all of this happened,” said the 16 year old New Dorp Junior. “while everything was going on all I was thinking was I need to get out of this place (his home) alive.” Gary then took all of the items he had that he considered were important and swam down his block that was flowing viciously like a river. He then reached a neighbors house and stayed there until everything calmed down the next day. The whole baseball team went to his home and helped out as much as they could, and they went around the area to help out anyone in need. The team also held a tailgate on his block serving hot dogs, hamburgers, snacks and drinks which they gave to many people throughout the New Dorp area. “I’m so thankful for my great teammates and my coaches , and what they did for me,” proclaimed Knapp. “I don’t know what I would do without these guys.” —————————————— Editor’s Noteby Anthony Taliercio I did not understand hurricane – Sandy – But I have learned what happened after reading Gary Knapp’s Story.

Last week on Saturday, October 20th, the New Dorp Cougars played the Curtis Warriors at New Dorp’s homecoming football game. During the homecoming game, everyone was going wild on New Dorp’s side, expecting the win. Especially being that the week before that was Wagner High School’s homecoming game, and New Dorp beat them 22-6. Instead, New Dorp was very upset with the result, being that they lost the game 31-19. At halftime, the game was close, with the tied up score of 7-7. The game was close, until the 3rd and 4th quarter when the Curtis Warriors scored 4 times. They scored twice in the 3rd quarter and twice in the 4th quarter, and held the Cougars to score only twice in the 4th quarter. “Bad defense could have been better second half.” says New Dorp’s football kicker Amir Mustafic. What Amir said was true, being that in the beginning half the game was close and tied at 7-7, until the second half, where the Warriors scored four times and held the Cougars only at two. Not only were the players upset, but the fans were too. “In the beginning I honestly thought New Dorp had the win”, says New Dorp High School student Ryan Van Pelt, “but then in the second half Curtis just dominated New Dorp”. Curtis rushed for 254 yards overall, and 195 of them were in the second half, which was the main aspect to the 31-19 loss to Curtis.

New York Knicks rookie guard Iman Shumpert tore his left ACL and lateral meniscus, and MRI revealed on Saturday. Shumpert is expected to miss 6-8 months following surgery, meaning that he will miss the rest of the Playoffs and also most of next season. Shumpert is one of the best young defenders in the NBA and it will be a tough loss to overcome for the Knicks. He led the league in steal among all rookies and was also in the top 10 in that category among the entire NBA. “It hurts your spirits when you see your best defensive player go down like that,” J.R. Smith said. “We have a lot of people and hopefully someone can step up for him.” This now forces Knicks coach Mike Woodson to either start sophomore guard Landry Fields or the streaky shotting guard J.R Smith. There will be huge shoes to fill no matter who he decides to start.

New York Knicks Center Tyson Chandler was awarded the Defensive Player of the Year (DPOY) trophy on Wednesday May 2, for his stellar play on defense. He received 45 first place votes and 311 points from sportswriters across America, narrowly beating out Serge Ibaka who had 41 first place votes and 294 points in total. “To be considered the best defensive player in the league this year was just the ultimate for me,” Chandler said. “As much as I thought about it while I was in the gym every single day training, it’s kind of one of those things where that always goes to the glamorous guy. It’s been that way my entire career. So to finally get this, it means the world.” Chandler has been a key acquistion for the Knicks this year and is the main reason for the Knicks turn around on the defensive end. Last year the Knikcs were at the bottom of the league in defense as a team and they are now in the top 5 in defensive efficiency. Chandler is the first Knick ever to win the NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award.

After Monday nights 104-94 loss in Game 2 to the Miami Heat, Knicks forward Amar’e Stoudemire was so angry that he punched glass that was containing a fire extinguisher. Sources say half of the Knicks Star’s hand was “hanging off” after the incident. Amar’e himself didnt even realize that he was even injured, stating ”It wasn’t like I had a closed fist and just punched through the glass, It was nothing like that. I just walked by, wanted to make some noise, swung my arm, hit the fire extinguisher door and didn’t even realize I was cut at all until Josh Harrellson told me I was cut…Then I saw the cut. Unfortunately after games, when it’s very passionate, things happen. You don’t expect … to injure yourself, but you’ve just got to deal with it.” The injury of Stoudemire was a huge blow for the Knicks who just recently lost guard Iman Shumpert due to a torn ACL and laterla meniscus. They are also playing without their breakout point guard Jeremy Lin who started the “Linsanity” stir in February. Stoudemire is ruled out for Game 3 and is listed as doubtful for Game 4.
