New Dorp High School had Spirit Week 2013 from Monday March 11th to Friday, March 15th. The week includes activities for students from different academies to have fun. They show their spirit through involving themselves in these events taken place. On Monday the 11th, students were asked to wear the color purple to show support of anti-bullying awareness. Any piece of purple counted and many students participated because they were gladly against it. Bullying has been physically and emotionally destroying students due to other children. According to bullyingstatistics.org, the most common type of abuse, occurring within 77% of all students, is verbal bullying. Bullying is never an answer including when it affects many kids’ lives. On Tuesday the 12th, students dressed up as their favorite superhero. Many people went all out will their costumes including Mr. Passalacqua, a teacher at New Dorp, dressed up as Batman. Roarke Carrique dressed up as Freight Train Man, a fictional superhero that he created. On Wednesday, Pajama Day, many people took advantage of the fact, they literally rolled out of bed and came to school. Students enjoy this because it makes them feel comfortable and at home while in school. Thursday was Twin Day, a day when you can dress up with friends in any cool unique way. The meaning of Twin Day is to just dress exactly alike as someone, or other words “twinning it”. You plan an outfit and put together accessories to expose you and your twin throughout the day. Seniors Nicole Sannino and Matt Angel dressed in dark grey sweats with a black v-neck top and Jordan sneakers. In addition, Emily Zoda and Roemello Agjmurati, a couple, dressed alike as well complete with a button down brown shirt with rolled up sleeves, jeans, skater-like footwear and a matching grey hat. Friday was Senior Reversal Day and the Pep Rally. For Senior Reversal Day, students switched places with their teachers, taught their class and their teachers took the place of them. This gave students the opportunity to imitate their teachers and joke around. First period in Economics class, Mr. Reilly’s brother, Dom Reilly, a senior at New Dorp, taught the class instead of Mr. Reilly. Mr. Benjamin was absent so another student was imitating him. All the students who had their fellow classmate as a teacher were able to enjoy themselves on this half day of classes. During 8th period was the Pep Rally. Students from all SLCs went down to the auditorium to introduce the spring sports team members and the competition cheerleaders. Dancing With the Teachers was a blast and teachers from many SLCS were dancing with their students. One of the most popular hits on YouTube called the ‘Harlem Shake’ influenced teachers to do the same at the Pep Rally. The Harlem Shake starts off with one person with a helmet or mask on dancing while others are minding their own business or talking, then out of nowhere people start going crazy and dancing to the main tune of the song. All in all, it was a fun week for the whole school and showed just how much fun we could have here at New Dorp High School. Tweet

The post Spirit Week appeared first on New Dorp Voice.

Perhaps one of the most successful programs in New Dorp High School is the VE club. VE club stands for Virtual Enterprise, a business class that allows students to run a business while facing all of the real world issues that a company would face. On a day to day basis, these students run a virtual solar panel company known as “Solarity”, in which they sell solar panels to other schools and consumers. Their main product is a $10,000 solar panel that can be used to support generators, air conditioners or other means needed for electricity. Mr. Presti, coordinator of VE, assigns each student affiliated with the program to a role that connects to their personal interest. In an interview with the New Dorp Voice, Billy Ding the CEO of Solarity stated that his job is to, “construct a business plan which is mainly used for a competition”. Francis Zepata, the audit of Solarity claims that he “checks over all the accounting, makes sure the company is running smoothly and reports it to the CEO.” On January 18th, 2013, New Dorp High School’s Virtual Enterprise teams, Solarity and Law and Insurance competed in the Citywide Business Plan Competition.

Pull, a rising band from New Dorp High School has just released their new extended play, Emergency Protocol. The band consists of a lead guitarist, Roemello Agjmurati, a drummer, Christopher Guzman, and a pianist/ keyboardist, Joseph Rice. After recruiting a new bass player, Deanna Giordano, they hit The Red Room Studio, near St. George, Staten Island with a commitment to accomplish something new. The EP titled Emergency Protocol consists of these five songs in the following order: Hopeful Horizon, Eternal Endeavor, The Witness, Song 4, and Chocolate Snow. After being published on iTunes, Google Play and various other webstores, on January 5th, minor advertising started to roam the school’s hallways; from person to person primarily by word of mouth. “I say the band is forced together by our friendship,” said Joseph, Pull’s keyboardist. Roemello added “It is nothing special when we gather up together to write something new, it is like spending time with the people you love.” Roemello discussed how the writing process goes with the rest of the band as well. It is obvious that the band is very dedicated to their work. They even have an upcoming gig planned. They will be playing in Battle of the Bands on April 6th, 2013. The event will be held at the Full Cup, 388 Van Duzer Street in Stapleton, Staten Island. It will take place between 6:30 pm and 12:30 am.

Why are they cutting down the center? One simple answer, FUNDING CUTS! Its going to be very hard for the students who get sick and don’t have the benefits they need, so kids who don’t have benefit’s are going to be in the hospital more often than needed if this were to take place. If so it will happen around July 1st, of 2013. A good way we can try to save this from happening is to try to write a letter to the major and explain the reasons why we need this in our school and how important it is to New Dorp High School students and the people who work there. We are the only high school that has a health center and the students in New Dorp want to keep it from not getting cut. They are short of money all over, so everyone is going to get paid less now. “Being a student at New Dorp High School for four(4) years I never had to go to the health center but there may be students that will need to go so if they close it down if may unbeneficial to other students in the school…” said New Dorp High School student Nicholas Leung. On January 8th of 2013 Borough President James P. Molinaro praised the New York City Department of Health, re-instated New Dorp High School health center that was in danger of being closed due to city budget cuts. It has been up and running for the past 22 years and has served well over 11,000 students. So as of today, Borough President Molinaro had decided to speak with Commissioner Farley and convinced him to keep the health center open. “I’m very pleased to hear that they will keep the health center up and running because it will be easier for students…” said New Dorp High School student Joseph Kramer. __________________________________________________________________ Credits *Picture Credit: Timothy Becker* *Editor: John Vono* *Writter: Lori Minunni* Tweet

The post B.P.

(Pictures provided by Emily Zoda) Normally, when a United States Cabinet member visits a school they’re the center of attention. In this case, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan was no more than a concerned listener. On December 13th, Sec. Arne Duncan visted a few areas in Staten Island that were affected by Hurricane Sandy, including New Dorp High School. Sec. Duncan arrived at exactly 9:00 AM walking beside a Secret Service agent, while he greeted Principal Deirdre DeAngelis and UFT President Michael Mulgrew. Images of the tragedies displayed on a screen served as the backdrop to a filled courtroom of New Dorp students, their parents and staff members whom were affected by the storm. A very emotional Principal Mrs. Deanglis welcomed everyone in the courtroom. Duncan sat beside Mrs. DeAngelis, UFT President Michael Mulgrew, Chancellor Dennis Walcott and Ernie Logan. All prepared to listen to each person’s story. New Dorp High School Physical Education teacher, Peter Lamarca was not personally affected by the storm. Although, he felt the need to help his community. “This country is great because family is value,” said Mr. Lamarca. “It’s not about today or tomorrow, its about may or june if we’re still going to be compassionate and remember what happened.” Mr. Dillon, a local business owner, w hose business was destroyed from the hurricane, explained how all people present had two things in common. That all have been affected by the storm and got support from the school and community. He went on to say Deirde is everyones “therapy.” “The result of your leadership supported schools and family.” said Chancellor Dennis Walcott. Arne Duncan expanded on Chancellor Walcotts’s discussion of leadership. Stating that school is not about reading or writing, its about family. “This will change you forever,” said Sec. Duncan. Cant tell you how much you inspire me as a community.” UFT President Michael Mulgrew also went on to say, ” I knew the story of this school had to be told this is why I asked Secretary Duncan to come to the school.” Tweet

The post Hurricane Sandy Draws Attention From Secretary Of Education Arne Duncan appeared first on New Dorp Voice.

Steven Pepe, the music teacher at New Dorp High School and his choir with the help of the band are coming back with another annual performance. This year, it will fall on the 19th of December at 7:00 PM. The Winter Show promises to be an impressive once again performance. “It gives the students the opportunity to perform and work towards a performance as well as to celebrate the holidays. It gives them something to be excited about. It is hard to teach when you don’t have a goal in mind, we get to play songs that everyone knows.” said Steven Pepe. Similarly to the previous years, the show will consist of a choir selected by Steven Pepe himself and a band. The band currently consists of a few guitarists, Maxim Kleiman on the bass, and Daniel Bond on the drums. “They’re ready for it. At this stage they’re ready for. I been nervous the whole year but we pulled through.” said Pepe. The band tries to practice as much as they possibly can; almost three times a week. They are expected to play a number of songs on the day of the show. All of the songs are based on the upcoming holiday season. They focus mainly on the topic of Christmas. As the practices go on, they continue to become better and progress to be more in sync with each other. Their bonds with each other have been increased. Looking forward for a successful show, “I think it will turn out good, hoping a lot will be there. It’s free, we are not selling tickets this year.” said Pepe once again.

This week in New Dorp High School, the students of every grade level are coming together for another performance. This year’s Sing, the musical promises to be a spectacle to remember. Sing is an annual event that the school forms. Two teams, Senior-Soph and Junior-Fresh. These two groups will be attempting to outdo each other in a battle of originality. Each team must make a play from scratch and bring it to life in their own special way. “I was prepared and nervous because I’m in charge of everything,” said Anglie Breslin, the director of Sing 2012. The members of the teams must practice for a long time with effort before the actual performance can take place. The process of training is very stressful for all the students participating in Sing. During one of the practice sessions of Senior Soph; they were having a lot of problems with lighting and sound. They also had some trouble with moving and setting up the props on stage. On the night of the play, the performers must perform their creative acts in front of an enormous audience at New Dorp High School’s auditorium. In the audience, there will be judges that will judge their performance on various different categories. The categories include band, dance, acting and proper design. The winner of the majority of these categories will be pronounced as the winner of Sing 2012. “It was postponed weeks later. It was suppose to be November 16 now it is December 6,” said Anglie Breslin as well. “We were more than excited to get it done back to normal.” (Jazlyn Cerbin, Roarke Carrique, and Lindsay Martini had also contributed to this article) Tweet

The post Sing 2012 Performance is Here appeared first on New Dorp Voice.

Many people were affected by Hurricane Sandy on the east coast of America. Hurricane Sandy ruined homes, businesses and also killed and injured many people in Staten Island and across the Coast. Gary Knapp, a student and member of the New Dorp Varsity Baseball Team, was severely affected by this hurricane. Gary, who lives in the New Dorp area, got seven feet of ocean water on his entire first floor. Sandy ruined Gary’s room and most of his personal belongings “I cannot believe all of this happened,” said the 16 year old New Dorp Junior. “while everything was going on all I was thinking was I need to get out of this place (his home) alive.” Gary then took all of the items he had that he considered were important and swam down his block that was flowing viciously like a river. He then reached a neighbors house and stayed there until everything calmed down the next day. The whole baseball team went to his home and helped out as much as they could, and they went around the area to help out anyone in need. The team also held a tailgate on his block serving hot dogs, hamburgers, snacks and drinks which they gave to many people throughout the New Dorp area. “I’m so thankful for my great teammates and my coaches , and what they did for me,” proclaimed Knapp. “I don’t know what I would do without these guys.” —————————————— Editor’s Noteby Anthony Taliercio I did not understand hurricane – Sandy – But I have learned what happened after reading Gary Knapp’s Story.
