Boston Bombing from Acma on Vimeo. The mother of the two terrorists speaks out to the public about the entire situation and the pressure she is going through. Her reaction to this situation is quite surprising for the public. Zubeidat Tsarnaeva, mother of the Tsarnaeva’s brothers is a very spiritual person. She has her religious beliefs but when she arrived in the United States in 2002, she went to a beauty school and did facials at a suburban daytime spa, just like any other hard working American. But after she returned to her home country, things started to change. When she moved back, she started to dress more like her beliefs allowed, meaning the hijab and other Muslim outfits. Before this, she wore low cut blouses and wore her hair like in the 1980’s . Since this dramatic change in her appearance, many people suspect her to be a terrorist but her family members completely denied the fact that it is true. “It’s all lies and hypocrisy, I am sick and tired of all of this nonsense that they make up about me and my children.People know me as a regular person, and I’ve never been mixed up in any criminal intentions, especially any linked to terrorism.” Quote founded on Huffington Post. She believes in the same religion as her sons believed in which causes a lot of suspicion about her personal and ethical views. Many people believe that she is linked to the Boston Marathon Bombing because of phone calls made through her and her sons in recent years. There is no official evidence that she has anything to do with the attack but, there will a close watch on her and the Tsarnaeva family in Russia by Officials. At New Dorp High School, 12th grader Maxim Kleiman has shared his opinion about the terrorist attack and how he can relate to it.

On Wednesday February 27, 2013, Taliban spies infiltrated the Afghan Local Police post in Ghazni Province, south of the capital. The infiltrators drugged 17 Afghan police officers and killed them in their sleep. The attackers stole all their weapons and set a police vehicle on fire before running away. According to Afghan officials, they said it was the single worst incident. Local officers said the attack took place around 1 a.m., after the policemen in the post had been drugged during dinner and have fallen asleep. In addition, explosive devices were placed in Kunar Province which killed eight members of the Afghan Border Police and wounded four officers. General Zahid said that 10 of the victims were Afghan Local Police officers who had finished their training, and seven others were undergoing training. The A.L.P program has been controversial in many parts of Afghanistan because of inside attacks and as well as violations of human rights. The death toll on Wednesday was 17 local police officers. Another officer that the Taliban claimed was one of its supporters gunned down three fellow police officers. With the explosives at Kunar Province, the death toll rose to 30. “The Taliban immediately claimed responsibility for the attacks against the officers in the Musa Qala district center. The attackers actually killed four officers, stealing their weapons and a Toyota Corolla to join the Taliban. “It’s horrible how anyone could do this intentionally and not feel gulity.” says Alexa Deriso..

On Wednesday, January 30, 2013, the capital of China, Beijing’s government placed an emergency measure to deal with the heavy smog that covers the city for many years. One solution their government came up with was temporarily shutting down more than 100 factories and demanding one-third of government vehicles to stay off the streets. By taking these actions, they can limit how much pollution they put in the air. To truly see how harmful the pollution in China is, the United States Environmental Protection Agency rated the air as “hazardous.” The air quality index in China surpasses 700 which means that no one should be allowed to venture outdoor. During this month, Beijing has faced the most polluted air days on record. The fact that air quality has been rapidly decreasing, residents in northern China are angered. Over 20 million citizens in China are forced to be indoors because of the hazardous chemicals that lurk in their air. “I hope we can have blue skies, clean water, less traffic and a more balanced education system,” said Mr.Wang at a session of the municipal legislature. In addition, he also told the legislature that the government planned to cut the density of major air pollutants by 2 percent this year. Government officials are ordering 180,000 cars off the roads, promoting “clean energy” for government vehicles and heating systems. In recent reports,it shows that there are about 5.18 million cars in Beijing. However, compared to 2008, there were about 3.18 million cars. In just 5 years, it increased by 2 million. Despite the increase of vehicles, the Beijing’s government hope to plant trees over 250 miles in the next five years. According to the United States Energy Information Administration, reports have shown that China contributed to 47 percent of the global coal consumption. That means it is equal to the amount of coal consumed by all of the other countries combined. Coal consumption in china increased by 9% from 2011. “It’s hard to believe that a city, covered in smog for many years and the Beijing’s government just started to take action.” said Kevin Huang. Mr. Pan asked the 14 million followers of his microblog whether they should adopt a “clean air act” and 99% of the followers voted “yes.” “In order to control air pollution, everyone needs to participate,” said Mr.Pan. Citizens in China can only hope that their government can help lower the pollution index. Only time will tell if Beijing situation will become better. Beijing fights air pollution from Acma on Vimeo.

On January 7th, 2013, three boys were digging a hole to hide themselves from an air raid. The little kids are digging bomb shelters just incase an air raid were to hit Syria. Time that could be spent playing sports or hanging out with a friend, is replace by digging a hole to shelter themselves. In addition, eight thousand Syrians fled and arrived at the Turkish border. However, they wouldn’t let anybody go into Turkey. Despite the fact that the Turkey government didn’t allow them to enter, 200 families huddled around plastic tents that fill the role of a temporary shelter, however it will do nothing in the cold weather from Winter. Families are furious, but Turkey couldn’t provide their daily needs. The kids scavenged for wood and burn plastic to keep warm. They chop down weeds to supplement their faltering diet. However, this method can only last them for so long. Wood is scarce. Plastic is easier to find but it burns with a sickly, acidic smoke. Dozens of families have taken advantage of the concrete truck shelters at this border crossing, moving their tents into the hangar-like structures, hoping the roofs will provide a little more shelter. “It’s horrible how these families have to suffer just because the Turkish government didn’t want let them in.” said New Dorp student, Christopher Fertitta. As these families gather together in Syria, other countries should help and protect the ones who need help. 8,000 Syrians are in need of food and they have to scavenge for bits and scrap just for survival. Now is the time to set aside the differences and help these Syrians.

Taliban suicide bombers attacked a United States Afghan air base in eastern Afghanistan early Sunday. Soldiers started a gun battle that lasted about 2 hours causing an uproar. There were American helicopters firing down on the militants. Unfortunately, the gun battle caused death among the Afghans, five were found dead. The officials said the one who is responsible for this attack was the Taliban spokesperson Zabiullah Mujahid. No one has found the reason for this random attack so far. This was the biggest attack on the Jalalabad airbase since February. During an attack on February, a suicide car bombing at the gate triggered a huge explosion, and it left 5 Afghans dead, and six of them were civilians. Furthermore, two “enemy aircrafts” were destroyed and the base was engulfed in flames. U.S. helicopters were deployed to defend the base after the firefight had ended. In addition, the capital of Nangarhar province said that suicide bombers in two vehicles staged an attack who tried to detonate their explosives, however they were fatally shot by the ISAF and Afghan forces. “All these suicide bombings has got to stop, we have to do something about this” says Mr. Benjamin , a government teacher in New Dorp high school. But during yesterday’s suicide bombing, people were killed but only two of them were students, they were medical students that got caught up during the attack. All of this is very devastating, and no one even has a clue on why all this happened. The good news is that the NATO military coalition said that the suicide bombing was a failure. None of the attackers even got close to the perimeter. All the fighting ended early during midmorning. According to the reports the numbers of suicide bombers were three. NATO will have a conference with the United States on its long term military role in Afghanistan.

The conflicts between Israel and the other independent state such as Gaza, with its terrorist organization, Hamas seem like and endless downhill battle. Days after an agreement between Israel and Hamas, Israel had eased restrictions on Gaza fishermen while Hamas officials swore to rearm with weapons from Iran. “It {the Israeli conflicts} is nothing new because that problem has been around since the Israeli independence in 1948. It is a cat-and-mouse game with Arabs blasting rockets, and we {Israelis} attack back.
Lately, it only became more intense because the Arabs have acquired a new supply of rockets from Egypt,” said Maxim Kleiman, an Israel-born senior at New Dorp High School.

About 90 people goot a suprise wake up when they awoke to find there farm land to be flooded with water. Floodwaters washed over 300,000 acres of fertile farmland in southeast Missouri last week. The flooding of crops and houses was heinous because it was result of a human decision. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers blew a hole in the levee at Birds Point, Missouri, on Monday, destroying farmland in a bid to save communities upstream. Many farm owners was devistated over this decision. They felt that it was truely unnessicary. There crops for this season was ruined it being drastically devistating being as prices for crops were at a record high. Early estimates put crop damage alone at $100 million. The decision to blow a hole in the levee on Monday came after weeks deciding what to do. Record melted snow across the Upper Mississippi River was headed downstream just as heavy rains were swelling the Mississippi and Ohio rivers. Also, high waters are creating anxiety all the way to the Gulf of Mexico. The U.S had to make a desision and quick. The decision was regrettable but necessary. Cairo, Illinois, a town of about 3,000 residents at the confluence of the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers, was in imminent danger of flooding. High waters remain a threat for many other communities in Illinois and Kentucky. A federal judge upheld the U.S Army corps decision to do this. They felt that it was nessary. For the damages to the crops, The U.S. Department of Agriculture says federal crop insurance will cover all the losses.

“Osama bin Laden was responsible for the deaths of thousands of innocent people…. The forces of peace were successful last night. International terror has not been defeated. We’ll all have to remain vigilant,” said a spokesman speaking on behalf of German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Last night, Sunday May 1st, President Barack Obama announced to the American people that Osama bin Laden had been killed by the U.S. forces. Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden was killed in in a firefight with a team of US operatives who raided the compound where he had been hiding. Bin Laden had eluded US forces that had invaded Afghanistan following the 2001 attacks on the US, escaping across the mountainous border with Pakistan. After years of searching, last August the US picked up his trail in Pakistan and after months of investigation he was tracked to a compound in a city north of Islamabad. With the ten year anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks approaching, the news has affected people across the country in different ways. President Barack Obama said on Monday that the world is now a better place after the death of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, but is it? Osama bin Laden was responsible for the deaths of thousands of innocent people, therefore many americans who have lost loved ones on September, 11 have now found closure. Justice can finally be served after many lost years, however what happens next? Will the al Qaeda retalitate? Is it too soon to be relieved and calm? “Al Qaeda is going to try and get revenge and the consequences can be much bigger than the incident of 9/11” stated Romana Chobey, junior at New Dorp High School.

On April 9th, 2011 Tristan van der Vlis walked into a mall in southwest Amsterdam and shot innocent people at random. Alphen aan den Rijn is a suburb where the mall is located. Vlis walked in with multiple guns and killed about six people; no motive was known. Vlis, a twenty-four year old man acted alone in the shooting of a crowded mall. He was armed with a machine gun, and opened fire in the mall. He walked around shooting anyone he could; he killed six people and wounded fifteen, two of them are in critical condition. People ran and hid trying to get away. Soon the shooting stopped and they found Vlis to be dead. Vlis had ended up shooting himself in the head. A suicide letter was soon retrieved from Vlis’s apartment. Vlis’s mother found it while she went through her son’s things. She and her husband both cooperated with police. Still no motive was found when going through the letter. The letter only stated how he wanted to kill himself, and that he apologizes for what he was going to do. “This sounds just like the Brazil shooting, both had no motive and left suicide notes,” said John Lapre, a Staten Island Resident. “It’s kind of scary to know how much sick people are out there.” Police retrieved about five guns on and around Vlis’s corpse. “This is actually very shocking, I never thought this happened in places other than the United Stated,” says Donika Shala. Unlike the United States places like Amsterdam ban guns. Unfortunately Tristan van der Vlis was in a shooting club, and three of the five guns were registered for him. Police are now investigating how he got a hold of the other two guns.
