Rick Santorum, a Republican candidate with numerous opinions that has a lot to say about same-sex marriage and about his opposition to libertarianism. Santorum opposes same-sex marriage, saying the American public and their elected officials should decide on these incredibly important moral issues, rather than Supreme Court, which consists of nine unelected, unaccountable judges. Santorum has stated that he does not believe a “right to privacy” is part of the Constitution. He has been critical of the Supreme Court decision in Griswold v. Connecticut, which held that the Constitution guaranteed that right and overturned a law prohibiting the sale of contraceptives to married couples. He has described contraception as “a license to do things in a sexual realm that is counter to how things are supposed to be,”and said in 2003 that he favors having laws against polygamy, adultery, sodomy, and other actions “antithetical to a healthy, stable, traditional family”. In June 2011, Santorum said he would continue to fight very strongly against libertarian influence within the Republican party and the conservative movement. Government should keep our taxes down and keep our regulation low and that we shouldn’t get involved in the bedroom, we shouldn’t get involved in cultural issues, you know, people should do whatever they want. Well, that is not how traditional conservatives view the world, and I think most conservatives understand that individuals can’t go it alone.

On Thursday, November 3rd 2011, unusual weather hit Nome, Alaska. Very high seas as well as powerful winds impacted the western region. On Tuesday night Alaska was hit with conditions similar to a blizzard, experiencing 80 mile per hour winds. Building were affected, loosing roofs and getting hit with water. This is one of the strongest storms that have hit Alaska in about 40 years. As seen in the Huffington Post, Jeremy Zidek talked about the weather in Alaska with Associated Press saying, “People out there are used to extreme weather, but this is not a normal storm … This is of a magnitude that can be a storm of record, extremely dangerous, and the state is treating it as such.” According to Associated Press and seen written in the Huffington Post, ‘big low-pressure systems hit Alaska often, but this one is different because of the track it took and because ice hasn’t formed yet to protect the shore.’ Scott Berg, a meteorologist says, “Because we don’t have shore-fast ice this time of year, that’s what’s significant.” As stated in Huffington Post. “Just hasn’t got cold enough yet. We have open water generally until the first of December.” Also seen in Huffington Post, Brad Johnson, cites The Weather Channel’s Tim Ballisty, who writes about Alaska’s storm, “The current lack of sea ice in the Bering Sea will allow this storm to maximize its impact. Ice typically acts as a natural barrier that migrates the effects of destructive wave action and coastal flooding along the shoreline.” Clearly, this weather was unual and is affecting the people living in Nome, Alaska. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/11/09/nome-alaska-bering-sea-storm-weather_n_1083752.html Tweet

The post Alaska Hit With Unusual Weather appeared first on New Dorp Voice.

After the missions of space shuttles have been completed NASA doesn’t just throw out the planes. They put them on display in a museum for all to see. To show people how the shuttle went into space and returned back safe and sound. As the last space mission ended NASA plans to show the public the planes and also take out parts of the shuttles to reuse or to test and experiment. After the shuttles landed back home at earth NASA has gotten requests to get parts of the shuttle to research and learn more about. To discover the damages space does on the shuttle and how it could be improved. The parts that will be coming out will not change the shuttle at all since it is going to go on display. The plane is going to look the same but parts will be replaced with fake ones. The engines will be taken out to be reused or tested to make more better. The thrusters will be taken out since they are highly hazardous and replaced to look just the same. NASA wants to also put this on display to show the future world what it started from in space flight. To show those in the future it did start like this and the this shuttle did go into space and came back safe and sound. New Dorp High School student John LaPre was asked, “ What do you think of the idea of them using the shuttles as displays in museums and using its parts for future use?” He answered, “I feel there was no point of NASA doing that. Why couldn’t they just repair the shuttle and use it over and over again instead of wasting money on building news ones. Yes it might bring more research to space flight, its just pointless.” NASA doing this can cause the country to know more about space flight. It shows the world up close what the shuttle looked like and the success the shuttle had in space. The parts being shipped out to numerous places gives an opportunity for the U.S. To expand in its research and technological dominance.

Derek Jeter is under 20 hits away from a plateau that few baseball players have gotten to. 3,000 career hits. In fact, it’s such an elite club, only 26 hitters in baseball history have made it. Shortly, Derek Jeter will become number 27, coincidently; the Yankees have won 27 World Series Titles. Jeter wants to enjoy the road to this milestone though. His last milestone was to become the all time Yankees hit leader. For Derek, that was a long hectic road where everything became magnified because of the press. Derek doesn’t want that to happen again. “It’s hard to enjoy something when everything’s negative,” Jeter said. “As of late, things have been pretty positive around here, so I’m enjoying it.” Derek will most likely collect his 3,000th hit during the Yankees 10 game home stand spanning from June 7th to June 16th. For Yankee fans, this milestone is a big thing. “This means a lot to me” says Yankee fan Chyanne Gilliam. “Derek Jeter has always been my favorite player growing up and it’s great to see how far he’s come.” Now, it’s just playing the waiting game.

Nicole Polizzi, or better known as Snooki, a cast member on the MTV show “Jersey Shore”, has once again gotten herself into trouble. Only difference this time, it was without drinking. On Monday, May 30th, in Renaissance City, of Florence, Italy, Nicole ran into an Italian police car. She crashed right into the back of it. The reason for the “accident” is said to be done on purpose, and to endorse the popularity of the show. “Yes I believe Snooki ran in to the police car on purpose,” states Frank Casale a junior attending New Dorp High School. “No one talks about the show and the cast since it stopped last season.” Nicole was driving in the front seat, accompanied by her co-star Deena in the passenger seat. The back of the car was filled with crew. She was driving a Fiat Multiple during Italy’s rush hour traffic. When Nicole crashed, which was said to be a “slow-speed impact”, not only did she crash into the car, she injured the two Italian police officers inside it. While the officers were sent to the hospital, Nicole was questioned by the police and her license was examined. Nicole and Deena were uninjured, as they sat, waiting on the edge of the curb. “The cast shouldn’t be in Italy,” says Nicolette Monte, a junior at new Dorp High School. “They can’t follow the rules and they are going to cause problems.” Nicole and the rest of her Jersey shore cast arrived in Italy early last month. There, they filmed the 4th season of the show; which will be later aired this year. The guys themselves, (Mike, Pauly, Vinny, and Ronnie) racked up a total of 300Euros in fines for various traffic violations.

“No one talks about the show and the cast since it stopped last season.”

Nicole was driving in the front seat, accompanied by her co-star Deena in the passenger seat.

“They can’t follow the rules and they are going to cause problems.”

Nicole and the rest of her Jersey shore cast arrived in Italy early last month. There, they filmed the 4th season of the show; which will be later aired this year. The guys themselves, (Mike, Pauly, Vinny, and Ronnie) racked up a total of 300Euros in fines for various traffic violations. They were later sent to a press conference; which is where they admitted driving in Italy is a difficult task.

During this month of May, Lady Gaga has been preparing for the release of her new album “Born This Way”. She has been everywhere she can be and the media has been following. Earlier in the month Lady Gaga stopped by Google headquarters on Tuesday, May 17th and it appears that at least a few Googlers are “little monsters,” too. Gaga rolled through the tech giant for an hourlong interview which Google has posted on YouTube, just before a performance in Oakland for her Monster Ball tour. The singer and songwriter took questions from fans, which she calls her “little monsters,” on YouTube and from Google’s vice president of consumer products, Marissa Mayer. Gaga also used the interview to announce she’ll be self-directing her next music video for the song “Judas.” The pop star whose real name is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, also talked about fame, being bullied as a kid, her vocal training, the millions of hits she gets on Google, the billions of views her videos get on YouTube, dodging the paparazzi, being a strong woman in pop music and many, many other subjects. She also took questions from Google employees who dressed up for the event in wild costumes typical of Gaga concerts. Many dressed like Gaga herself, one covered in pink, cloth toy bunnies and another who appeared to be wearing a towel and bath sponges. Gaga asked fans to submit questions over YouTube last week, “a fitting route as she was the first artist to aquire 1 billion views on the video sharing website”, Google said. She also took questions via Twitter and Google Moderator. “More than 54,000 video questions were submitted and more than 220,000 YouTube users voted on which questions should make the cut”, Google said.

On May, 16th 2010, the space Shuttle Endeavor is going to be taking off to go on a mission to the international space station. This is going to be the newly shuttles second attempt at taking off after technical malfunctions seemed to occur last launch two weeks earlier. Where the shuttle will be taking off many people will be miles away watching this massive rocket take off and make its way into space. The space shuttle’s mission tomorrow after its take off is to go to the international space station. There they will perform maintenance jobs and bring spare parts for the station if needed. They will also be installing a new instrument which would be a particle detector that would try to detect dark matter around the universe for those on earth to study. In doing this they would try and find out what the universe is made of and will be able to further their research in the world. This launch has been anticipated by many including officials of the united states and the president himself. After watching the whole procedure before take off they wanted to be there in person to see the thing actually take off. But unfortunately the president will not be able to. He had plans to stay for the first attempt, but did not make plans to see the second. Aside from the officials watching it take off, other bystanders miles away also have been ready to see it take off. They parked in perfect areas and were ready to see it take off at the first attempt, unfortunately they will have to wait till Monday to see if it really does take off. When asked New Dorp Student Lillian Ibrahim, “What do you think of Space Shuttle Launches?” She answered, “I think they are cool. But I think I lot of money is being used on events like when it could be used for the problems on earth today.” If I was there at the first attempt of the shuttle I would be angry that it had a problem and had to be aborted. On the other hand, I would be also happy they saw a problem before it was made into a bigger one. This proves that people are doing their jobs at the launch site and ended something that could have turned into a catastrophe.
