During the 21st century there has been many natural disasters that have occurred. One of these natural disaster is Tsunami. Tsunami, is a series of water waves that is caused by the displacement of a large body of water which occurs when an earthquake or an volcanic eruption takes place. Two incidence of tsunami that occurred during the 21st century is in 2004, December 26th at Sumatra, Indonesia and in 2011, March 12th at Northern Japan. These tsunami waves are caused due to the shift of plates beneath the earth’s soil or water.
“Oh My God, when I found out that Tsunami hit Sri Lanka I was shivering and my family moved to Nuwareliya the central city of Sri Lanka” states Devin Desilva a 12th grader in Royal College, Sri Lanka “what happened to Japan was nothing compared to the one that hit Sri Lanka”
These tidal waves have caused many lives, The Sumatra Tsunami have caused about 300,000 deaths and missing people, yet till this day researchers do not know how many lives have been lost to this specific incidence and on the other hand the total lives that was caused by the Japanese tsunami is yet to be revealed. There cannot be any comparison between these two tsunami’s because both tsunami’s had different effects. For example the magnitude rate between these two tsunami is different and the magnitude level of a tsunami may say the danger and the distance these tidal waves travelled. the magnitude of the Sumatra tsunami is 9.3 and the magnitude of the Japan Tsunami is 9.0. Even though the difference between the two tsunami is only .3 points the height and the length of the waves travelled is beyond comparison for example the height of the Sumatra tsunami is more than 30 feet and the height of the Japan tsunami was 14 feet.
“What happened to Japan was terrible, Even though I didn’t feel or witness the tsunami I did feel the earthquake that happened the day before the tsunami occurred” Wong Jackson a Sophomore at Tokyo International High school, Japan stated “ I am a afraid and I feel sad too, since the two nuclear factory exploded because of this incidence and may cause more illness and death to my fellow people”
One of the after affects of these tsunami that occurred is the diseases. The Sumatra Tsunami caused many diseases such as malaria because the water was polluted and the sea food that was consumed later had specific substances in them which caused food poisoning to many civilians. The after affect which Japan faced was buildings began catching on fire because of the materials used to build houses were boards which easily catches fire when rubbed into something that would spark fire and another affect was the nuclear facilities began exploding thus the spreading of radiation to these areas occurred and people began evacuating from these areas and have been evacuated since they may lead to more death or illness.Tweet
