On the 6th of February 2011, the Pittsburg Stellers and Green Bay Packers faced off in Dallas for the Lombardi Trophy. Besides a great game, people, including me, expected a lot from the Super bowl commercials. By September 15th, 2010, Fox had sold 90% of the spots for ads. By October, all of the spots for the Super bowl commercials were sold. The price of each ad began at US$3,000,000. Pepsi-Cola made a return after one year with 3 commercials and was named the official drink of the NFL. Doritos and Pepsi-Cola also hosted a competition for the public to make their own commercial featuring Pepsi Max or Doritos. Top 5 commercials were picked from both the Doritos and Pepsi Max Commercials making a total of 10 finalists. Each finalist received US$25,000 and a private trip to a XLV Super bowl party hosted by Doritos. Out of the top commercials for both Doritos and Pepsi Max, 3 were picked from each to be aired during the super bowl. Doritos also gave US$1,000,000 to the commercial which placed number 1 on the USA Today Ads Meter. Second place on the USA Today Ads Meter received US$600,000 and 3rd place won US$400,000. If 3 of the 6 Grand Prize Winners land in the top 3 spots in the Ad Meter, they would each receive an additional US$1,000,000 making a total of US$2,000,000 for the first place, US$1,600,000 for the second place and US$1,400,000 for the 3rd place. It seems Doritos went all out this year in being a big part of the super bowl ads.
This year the Super bowl had offered a lot of good commercials but my favorite was the Careerbuilder.com featuring the chimps parking the car. This commercial was really fun and creative in my opinion. The reason i picked the chimp’s commercial over the top commercial of the 2011 super bowl which featured a boyfriend teasing his girlfriend’s dog with Doritos was because the chimp commercial was more unexpected. I was able to predict that the dog was going to attack the boyfriend rather than predict what the chimps were going to do. I also thought the Chrysler commercial featuring Eminem was very well made. I thought featuring Eminem in a commercial about Detroit was something that made it easy to catch the viewer’s attention. Adding the music from his hit song “Lose Yourself,” added a perfect finishing touch to the commercial.
After asking about the best super bowl commercial, I received various responses. Most people stated multiple Doritos commercials, Darth Vader Kid and the 2 Eminem commercials as their favorite.
While watching the super bowl ads, I was comparing them to the ads from last year. I can honestly say that after looking at the top 5 commercials from 2011, the number 2 commercial from 2010 named “Play Nice” was better than all of them. It was something unexpected and undoubtedly hilarious.
This year majority of the commercials were really funny and creative. Some commercials like the one featuring Eminem held strong meaning. I was surprised at how much Doritos was offering to the public to make their own commercials.
